The Taya Vintage Outdoor Pendant is a hanging lantern rather than a wall fitting, and that is the point of it - it drops on an adjustable chain from a verandah ceiling, a covered patio or an alfresco roof, so the light sits down at eye level where it actually lights the table rather than washing the ceiling. The body is die-cast aluminium with tempered glass panels, a combination chosen for weight and weather rather than looks alone: cast aluminium will not rust the way steel does, and tempered glass survives the thermal shock of a cold night and a warm bulb. It reads as a traditional carriage lantern, with a peaked cap, a domed glass base and a turned finial, which is why it settles happily against weatherboard, brick or render without looking period-costume. Sealed to IP65, it takes an E26 or E27 LED rated to around 50,000 hours and lights roughly 5 to 16 square metres. Bronze and black finishes are available.

Care Instructions
Switch the power off at the wall and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Cast aluminium is powder-coated, so the finish is the thing to protect: wipe it with a soft cloth and warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, then dry it. Never use solvents, methylated spirits, abrasive pads or bathroom and oven cleaners - these strip powder coat, and once it is breached the aluminium underneath will bloom with white oxidation that cannot be polished out. Clean the tempered glass panels with a soft damp cloth and dry them properly; because this lantern hangs, insects and dust settle inside the glass over time, so open it once or twice a year to clean the interior and clear the base. In coastal areas rinse the whole lantern with fresh water every few weeks to keep salt off the coating. Because it hangs on a chain, check the chain links, the ceiling canopy and the fixings each season, and give the lantern a gentle tug to confirm it is still secure. Do not let the chain twist, as a twisted chain puts strain on the cable running through it.
